5th Year Subject Choice March/April 2020

Due to the school's closure as a result of Covid-19, the school cannot provide the usual classes information sessions for students and parents about 5th Year subject choice. This year, we will need to rely on online information to support students in making the correct subject choices.

Below are number of resources which will help both students and parents make this informed choice. We hope that they will be of value to you.

Students should ensure that they have joined their Guidance Teacher's online Google Classroom group. There will be further support and direction there if required. Additionally, Mr. O Doherty is available for queries that may arise at

In addition to the core subjects studied in 5th year at Dominican College, each student will also study three optional choice subjects. These are:

  1. Accounting
  2. Art
  3. Biology
  4. Business
  5. Chemistry
  6. Computer Science
  7. Geography
  8. History
  9. Home Economics
  10. Music
  11. Physics

You will notice that this year, for the first time, we are offering Computer Science as a subject at Leaving Cert.

Below, you will find links to detailed information on each of these optional subjects and to other resources that will assist you in making informed choices. This is a follow-on from the work that had been underway during school time with our Guidance Teachers in many classes.
Many students had begun personalised work on the 'Subject Choice Booklet 2020' and this is also available below for reference. If a student has not begun work on this, they should now do so. Please use and consider each of these resources carefully, so that you are fully informed on the content and nature of each subject.

Students who are exempt from Irish, will study Geography at that time unless in receipt of Learning Support which they will receive during Irish time.

LCVP is also available and please research this. Please note, if you do wish to do LCVP, your subject choice must contain one of the following groupings:

  1. Accounting and Music
  2. Business and Music
  3. Accounting and Art
  4. Biology and Home Economics
  5. Accounting and Business
  6. Art and Home Economics
  7. Accounting and Home Economics
  8. Physics and Chemistry
  9. Business and Home Economics
  10. Biology and Physics
  11. Business and Art
  12. Biology and Chemistry

Subject Choice Selection Form

All students, with their parents/guardians agreement, will select five preferences with number one being their first choice etc. We will make every effort to ensure that students get their first three choices, however, it is particularly important that careful consideration is given to all five preferences.
If students have any questions or queries about their choices they should email Mr. O'Doherty at, or contact their Guidance teacher via Google Classroom.

Click here to access and complete your subject choice form. If you have any questions about this form, or make a mistake on it, email Mr. O'Doherty.
